When i click on the download either from the lisit or just after a new pdf has downloaded, the microsoft edge screen appears for about 10 seconds with just a blank screen and then goes back to download list with nothing opened. I download an attachment (word or excel file) from an email in outlook and it saves to my downloads folder.

Sounds like you don't have the correct app or permissions or enough memory to open pdf's, jpeg's, etc, which is a bit surprising. If you don’t see a downloads folder there, then select the c drive under devices and drives. Press clear to clear all of your quick access history.

Locally on my computer it will open just fine (downloads folder, desktop, etc.). There is a green progress bar at the top that takes about 2 minutes to finish, then it just sits for another 3 minutes, then displays the files and folders within the downloads.
